The Hassles of Being a New Patient

Submitted by Aventura Dentists on July 15, 2011

Taking the time to drive all the way to the dentist office or spending time setting up an appointment just to find out that the dentist isn’t serving new patients. What a pain! How is it even possible that they aren’t accepting new patients? Why won’t they just make an exception for you? This may sound a little crazy, but it’s actually a common event. Check the video below to better understand how this situation comes about, and how to avoid it in the future.

Just like in a hospital, a dental office gets full, and new patients just can’t be accommodated. There just isn’t enough time in the day, or enough staff to help assist all the new patients. The office may have reached its legal capacity, or just doesn’t have the technology to maintain treatment to more than a specific number of people. Additional patients are not accepted because patient flow must be kept at a minimum at that time. Eventually openings will exist, however a timeline for this may not be known until the time of acceptance. Dental specialists often have capacity limits, as those dentists who practice advanced procedures, like surgery or cosmetic reconstruction have a lower acceptance rate than a regular family practitioner.

Factors that may put a damper on acceptance rates are as follows: hours of operations, holidays, reconstruction, management change, or even maintenance problems with technology or staff. Before choosing your dentist, or making that trip to the dentist office, make sure that your dentist will accept you. If you’re a new patient, make sure that the dentist is accepting new patients as well. Hopefully the video helps ease the process of finding the right dentist for your needs without going through the new patient rejection stage that is too much of a pain to deal with.
